About maps.eoportal.org

Welcome to maps.eoportal.org.  This site allows you to explore geographical data from many sources - including data from earth observation satellites.  We have set up various examples, but it's also easy to construct your own map.  Have a go! A note to web map experts

Satellite and GIS data

This map section gives access to Satellite and GIS Data by using a distributed network of Web Map Servers (OpenGIS specification).
Several of the servers distributing the satellite and GIS data are running on ESA's computers at ESRIN, Italy.

About the map viewer

Once you have selected the geographical region and time period you are interested in, you can choose what information you would like to have displayed on the map. The Layers Control displays the data that you have selected and allows you to add and remove layers, as well as modify the order with which these layers are displayed.

Click on "select layers" at the bottom right of the EoPortal Web Map Server. The Layers Control appears, which you can keep open to view the effect.
To define a layer, you must choose a Category, which may contain different Themes. For each theme, one or more layers will be displayed for you to choose from. By clicking on a layer, more information about that layer is displayed below. Click on the arrow to select highlighted layers. The layer appears in the list of Selected Layers, to the right.
A highlighted layer may be removed from the Selected Layers list by clicking on the X. Shift the layers up and down to avoid some layers obscuring others. Click on OK to view the map.
